Due to the infectious nature and rapid multiplication of bacteria such as Salmonella, livestock is frequently put at risk of infection by these pathogens.
Salmonella, together with E.coli and Camphylobacter, form part of the harmful Gram-negative group of bacteria.
The proliferation of these Enteropathogens is encouraged by warm moist environments, such as in the build-up of finished feed or dust around feed mills.
Compound animal feeds, comprising a variety of animal and vegetable ingredients, are easily contaminated by enteric bacteria, since these are ideal nutrient substrates for bacterial development.
The addition of a moisture level above 10%, especially in a hot climate such as South Africa, will lead to rapid multiplication of all micro-organisms, including mould and yeast. During microbial metabolism, both heat and water are produced, accelerating microbial activity and decay. This could lead to the production of mycotoxins, further putting animals at risk.
Enteropathogens can be eliminated before causing any harm by the use of Bitek’s range of Salmonella inhibitors and selective bactericides.
Organic acid based products
Feed and feed ingredients are protected by the strong anti-bacterial activity of free organic acids within the products. Macromolecular synthesis and the ability of the bacteria to multiply are disrupted by the intracellular accumulation of anions.
The initial action utilises primary volatile components which penetrate the entire feed and eliminate Salmonella bacteria within 48 hours. Secondary monomeric volatiles are responsible for long term protection, as these are released over time. Protection is thus given from recontamination during storage or transportation.
Formaldehyde based products
Formaldehyde is a potent antimicrobial and its volatile components will eliminate Salmonella bacteria on contact. If applied correctly, it will provide protection for up to 21 days against pathogenic bacteria and is particularly suited to the poultry industry due to the quick turnover time of feed.
Salmonella inhibitors and selective bactericides do not impair palatability.
