The rendering industry, like all other areas of the meat-production and processing industry, is coming under increasing pressure from environmental authorities. Heating of animal tissue during the process of rendering liberates a variety of odourous compounds.
There are demands to eliminate, or at least severely reduce the release into the atmosphere of undesirable odours – especially where a plant is located anywhere near residential developments. If any form of discharge (solid, liquid or gaseous) is considered undesirable, it is incumbent on the plant to do something about it.
Raw animal by-products are degradable organics and will therefore undergo a process of decomposition beginning as soon as an animal is slaughtered. Raw materials that are processed when fresh will yield minimal unpleasant odours during the rendering operation. If raw materials are not able to be processed fresh, it may be necessary to treat the gasses and vapours generated by the rendering process in order to prevent the escape of unpleasant odours.
Odours are generally produced by the proliferation of micro-organisms (process of decomposition) and their metabolites secreted into the raw material by-products to be rendered. These secondary metabolites are the major cause for unpleasant odours and can be neutralized by adding Bitek’s premium odour neutralizing agent, Biomask into the cooker.
